Crete is the largest of the Greek islands, situated in the Mediterranean approximately 160 km south of the Greek mainland.

Villa Athanati itself is in the quiet coastal area of Ammoudara, 3 km outside the busy and bustling town of Agios Nikolaos.  To get there by car takes less than 1 hour from Heraklion international airport.

Agios Nikolaos, a picturesque fishing town, consists of a marina, busy town centre, port and one of Europe’s deepest natural lakes. Full of restaurants, coffee shops, friendly locals, two municipal beaches and plenty of tourist attractions (without being too commercial), Agios Nikolaos has plenty to offer.

Spinalonga:

Famous ex-leper colony, and setting to the recent novel "The Island" by Victoria Hislop, Spinalonga is a cultural experience not to be missed.  Guided tours around the island reveal an intriguing history.  Agios Nikolaos has numerous boat trips leaving from the marina on a daily basis during peak season.

Boat Trips:

The marina also offers various sight-seeing tours, including glass bottom boats offering the chance to see local sea-life and other underwater mysteries.

Beaches:

Agios Nikolaos has two municipal beaches and there are several beautiful, sandy beaches within a 10 minute drive of the Villa Athanati complex.  Ammoudara beach (pictured) is only a 10 minute walk from the villas or 2 minutes in the car.
